I have never wanted wanted to do much to my previous rides. There is just something about the FJ that makes me feel like a kid again.
mtnkraut sums it up nicely and I can't tell you how many times I've said something similar..

On my previous trucks, I would usually get them larger tires and eventually upgrade the stock stereo to something a little better. I even bought new rims for my first 4x4, and on my 2nd 4x4, I dented the front bumper and replaced it with some Smittybuilt 3" tubes. Had enough left over from the insurance to do the back bumber as well so I did, but that was it. NEVER have I had the desire to drop cash into a perfectly good vehicle, but there's something about the FJ that makes me want to improve on an extremely capable STOCK vehicle.

I don't feel the need to have the best FJ out there (I mean, who can compete with A2A's Uber FJ??) nor do I want the coolest. What it boils down to for me is that I want MY FJ to be what I want it to be.. I want it to be specific to MY needs and for what I want to do. I think that we can all agree that our rigs develop a personality so to speak. And to some degree that personality usually reflects that of its owner while at the same time is somewhat unique to the vehicle.

The FJ is just so damned customizable and most of the mods are done for function, not just for show. The only true bling that I've added to my truck is the stickers on the black-outs and rear window. Everything else has been because I have either needed it (lift, tires and better skids for better protection and slightly improved clearance), or because I saw a potential need for it (winch, hi-lift).

What are your reasons for mods? Are they all too different from mine? What is it about the FJ that begs for change? Why do we all feel the need to improve on our rides? Talk to me. Tell me your reasons. I am here to help...

I've mod'd all of my vehicles even before I had a license. Starting from bicycles then to mopeds, then to Volkswagens, MR2, 4-Runner and now the FJ. It's in my blood I guess. The only difference with me for the FJ as opposed to the other vehicles I've owned is that A.) I have more money these days B.) I have children and want to minimize getting stuck somewhere with them as we begin exploring the great outdoor world.

I fully agree, I'm not keeping up with the jonses. I do see things I like on others rigs and when it is obtainable I go for it. I am the king of cheap deals. Mostly Ebay, Craigslist or being the guinea pig for a fabber or just trying the first run of products for a discount. Theres not too much on mine I've paid full price for, but I am Sooooo happy with my ride. There are still some things I want but for now I think she's pretty damn capable. Now my only issue is the upkeep. I grease and lube and tighten like hell but I always notice something squaking or clunking that I have to chase down but thats what happens when ya use it. I'm knockin on wood lucky something big hasn't broke yet. still waiting for that shoe to drop. lol :-\

At the end of the day, I want to get home/to camp/to my destination. All my mods are planned toward that end.

I just don’t like stock. Not just FJ’s, but stock anything. I think even if I had a Ferrari I’d customize the wheels or interior or something. I like being able to distinguish myself from the crowd a bit. I just like the feeling of driving something that is a bit different than the norm. I also like it when I see a stock FJ and they look at mine with that look that says, “why does his look so much cooler than mine?”

I think I mod the FJ so much in particular because it rewards you so well for it.

I have had plenty of vehicles that just didn't respond to modding very well. I didn't own them long.

My list of cars of note are mostly Corvettes (mod central) Scouts (mod to stay on the road), trucks, musclecars etc... All of them loved mods, and you could really tell something cool was done afterwards. Same with motorcycles, they reward modification so well.

My wife drives cars where rims would be all you really needed to do. BMW's, Infiniti's etc...

She put it best... "You ever notice that every car or bike you own has an enthusiast forum for it?"

You just don't see Infiniti G37 forums...

Everything I do results in a tangible difference off road, or when I am playing.

That's why I mod.
