mtnkraut sums it up nicely and I can't tell you how many times I've said something similar..mtnkraut said:I have never wanted wanted to do much to my previous rides. There is just something about the FJ that makes me feel like a kid again.
On my previous trucks, I would usually get them larger tires and eventually upgrade the stock stereo to something a little better. I even bought new rims for my first 4x4, and on my 2nd 4x4, I dented the front bumper and replaced it with some Smittybuilt 3" tubes. Had enough left over from the insurance to do the back bumber as well so I did, but that was it. NEVER have I had the desire to drop cash into a perfectly good vehicle, but there's something about the FJ that makes me want to improve on an extremely capable STOCK vehicle.
I don't feel the need to have the best FJ out there (I mean, who can compete with A2A's Uber FJ??) nor do I want the coolest. What it boils down to for me is that I want MY FJ to be what I want it to be.. I want it to be specific to MY needs and for what I want to do. I think that we can all agree that our rigs develop a personality so to speak. And to some degree that personality usually reflects that of its owner while at the same time is somewhat unique to the vehicle.
The FJ is just so damned customizable and most of the mods are done for function, not just for show. The only true bling that I've added to my truck is the stickers on the black-outs and rear window. Everything else has been because I have either needed it (lift, tires and better skids for better protection and slightly improved clearance), or because I saw a potential need for it (winch, hi-lift).
What are your reasons for mods? Are they all too different from mine? What is it about the FJ that begs for change? Why do we all feel the need to improve on our rides? Talk to me. Tell me your reasons. I am here to help...
