So, I got the book from John (aka TiTcruiser) and haven't really made much progress. I start reading, and soon there after, my eyes are closed and I'm sleeping.

BUT... I had mentioned my desire to gain the license and such to a co-worker (Brian, who went on the Mohave run earlier this year). He just so happened to have an old radio that someone gave him, but he's never used.

It's an ALINCO. The back of the unit says its a VHF FM Transceiver, model DJ-280T. The booklet seems to indicated it is a DJ-180.

So, is this a good radio? An appropriate radio? I know if I actually finish reading the book, I'd know these answers. ;D

I also know there are some uber radio peeps here dying to share their wealth of knowledge.

Dave, I can't help you on the radio, but that may be a marine type radio. Piper probably knows.
Here is how i studied:
I started reading the book at night, but got blurry eyes like you. Then I really started studying the exam questions in the back which led me to read the information that is actually asked on the exam. After you go through the exam questions in the back, the test itself is pretty easy.

I have the book for the General exam, but I have a feeling that it is going to take a long time.

Good Luck!
