I'm sure many of you read my post about my rig smelling like a Highschool Gym Locker over in the blue room. Well I have an update to my smellines. ;D Had some time today to pull things apart and take a look at stuff. Yes, the in cabin filter was black and discusting. Decided to make a quick trip over to Pep Boy's to get a replacement filter but they needed to special order one at $22.00. So I passed and decided to take the recommnedation of another forum member who seems to know a lot about AC. I pulled the filter and soaked it in a 50/50 solution of very hot water and Simple Green for like 10 minuets. I then rinsed the filter out in very cold water and got as much muck off as I could. I then tossed the filter in the close dryer for 15 minuets and "Vola" it was dry and did not shrink either ;). Decided just for the hell of it to shot some strawberry fragrance onto it to make my rig smell like sugar and spice and everything nice. ;D ;D Put her all back together and ran the AC on high for like 5 minuets and no smell. BTW the filter was white when I was done cleaning it. SO for about $7.00 in a bottle of green Simple Green and like 30 minuets of time I got her all smelling good again. Cheers!

You could also go to Home Depot/Lowes and get a pleated house AC filter and cut it to size and have 2 or 3 spares for about 10 bucks....Just find one that is the same thickness as the OEM filter.

I tried the simple green/water mix a few days ago when it was posted on your thread and it really did work. It went from brown to white in 15 minutes. That funky smell was gone the next day when it was put back in.

I tried the air freshener thing on top of the filter, but after a day, I started to smell like "winter breeze." I tossed it out and just have the cleaned filter and its all good.

I put the little coconut flavored tree on top of my cabin air filter. It seems to last a little longer in there. Not MUCH longer, maybe a week or so.

I know I'm sick ...but do any of you know how to keep the new car smell going. The FJ has 29K miles, but I like the smell.

That new car smell can be retained by spraying Scotchguard on the seats and any fabric materials.

No offense, but there is something about that smell that makes me want to throw up. I've heard that smell may actually be harmful. There's a section on Wikipedia about reproducing the smell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_car_smell

Just last night, it smelt like there was a giant pancake over me. I guess that is better than that play-doh smell I had before.

I don't know what happened.. but my AC in the last 4 days starting smelling like rotten fish, YUCK.
Check your shifter and transfer boot. An old practical joke I once watched happen: A problamatic employee was dealt with when the foreman crawled under the vehicle of the problem employee and wedged a fish (trout) in the shifter boot of his truck. He planned this over the Memorial Day weekend and when the guy came to work on Tuesday, he had his windows rolled down at 6:00 in the morning and low 60's, it was evident his plan was working. By the end of the week, there were maggots crawling into his truck through the crack in the shifter boot and the next day, first thing, we got to see the confrontation go down. The worst part is, the foreman was good friends with the owner and so needless to say, he got to stay with the company while the guy with the smelly fish truck got fired.
