Hello everyone,
I am very interested in employment with LADWP for the SPA position. Currently, I am on the waiting list through the hiring hall @ Local 18 IBEW for the exempt class of Utility Pre Craft Trainee, Book 1, #97. If you guys/gals don't know about this exempt 18-month training position, let me enlighten you about it. Basically, LADWP is going through an aging workforce, transition as we all know and are going towards renewable energy; away from coal. There are talks that now and within 5 years the workforce is 40% at/near/eligible for retirement. This leaves a gap for a new generation of people (20 something's) or people looking for a career change to earn a spot with the municipal. Here is a link to read up on this program: http://www.energyandutilityconference.org/2A_Coia_Jitahidi.pdf

Basically, it serves as an 18 month "pre-apprenticeship" to give people like myself utility/construction and maintenance experience with LADWP and other utilities, as an exempt "full-time" city/ladwp employee. Through research and references of pass entry level ladwp exams/positions this is one of the requirements to file for exam; with 8 months of experience. Look at the job bulletin in this link, for the 2012 SPA exam. Job Bulletin
Furthermore, through my research, I've noticed that this program serves as a pipeline to give one the ability to file for ALL entry level LADWP exams. (you can simply Google pass exam bulletins: electrical tester, electrical repairer, electric station operator (2012 or 2013) and you will see 8-months of UPCT experience as one of the requirements). Now as this relates to the last SPA exam in 2012, it was the first point under requirements. Furthermore, if any of you read the bulletin closely; under the civil service rules for filing it states 1) promo list 2) exempt (part-time) basis employees 3) open competitive, based on first come/served basis. This means that there are/were actually 3 list, the city uses/used and gives priority to people in the exempt class of Utility Pre Craft Trainee (UPCT), after the promo list has been exhausted. Am I right? I interpret it as promo list. I could be wrong though. Now the union hall dispatches twice a year, 25-30 UPCT's at a time. Being #97, and with people forgetting to resign quarterly, I figure its a matter of time in 2014, I will be dispatched for this program. This is actually perfect timing because, I plan to apply for the SPA exam 2015 (assuming they give it every 3 years as stated in a previous post (2012,2015,etc...) or once the city exhausts the list from the 2012 filing).

Lastly, My question is 1) what does the written test consist of?

Also, from what i've heard about how c.s works is...folks from the promo list has first dibs to transfer to dwp from other depts...;however; how does this work if someone from the open list scores higher then someone from the promo list?...like say i scored an 85 and a promo individual as an 80, do they go thru first? Or will i , since i scored higher?

The written test you took is only to "qualify" you to take the performance test. You need at least 70% to pass the written test. The performance test, or practical exam as I called it in my previous post is what is 100% weighted. So how well you do on the performance is solely responsible for where you will rank on the eligible list. I don't know when you'll get your results from the written exam. You may not even get your results, you may just get a notice that you passed and will now take part in performance exam when it is held.

If your curious what the performance exam will be, it was detailed in the job bulletin. Its essentially the portion that used to be the "interview". Climb a ladder, carry fire extinguishers, etc.
Ok, here's the deal. I took the SPA exam on Feb 7th 2015; and from what I hear personnel is so backed up and that is why they are taking forever with the results. The performance exam is weighted @ 100%. Which determines ur ranked score NOT the written test. The written test QUALIFIES U, to go forward in the process for the performance test.

Took my performance test today. I think it went OKAY.... I stumbled on the listening-verbatim part. Ugh...Does anyone know how many classes they will have for the life of this test (2015 exam)? Another question is when will they start pulling ppl in this year? I heard possibly one in Aug and one in Nov/Dec??? Thank You.

I heard a while back that they wanted to have 3 classes this year and 3 next year. I think I heard August for the first class as well, but my personal guess is it might be a little later than that
Im kinda stressed out about that performance test for some odd reason....so what ur sayin Cerp is that they will have about 6 classes of 30, for the life of this list? they call about 50-60 ppl per class?

That's what I heard they wanted to do, 6 classes of 30. In the past they would contact about 50-60 to fill up a class with 30. That may or may not be the case now as there is only 1 list, and its open; open candidates have more motivation, thus less of them decline the class.

I would say if when you get your results there is 100 people or less ahead of you, you have a decent chance of making it to the class. There were 150 people on the promo list and 115 people ahead of me on the open list. I barely made it to the last, 6th class to give you perspective.

I don't work in the training office and don't get any official info on how all of this is going. Its all pure speculation from me based on how the 2012 list played out. Its all documented in this thread if you haven't read through it already
How's training for u folks that started in Jan? Im still waiting on the results from the performance test tooken a couple weeks ago...I think the last string of performance test will be this weekend....how long does it take to find out the ranked scores, once this weekend passes....

I got that same email and made that call to give DWP personnel a phone number to contact me.

I'm at..
Your Final Score is: 89
Your Rank: 11
Number of individuals with same score: 11
Number of individuals with higher scores: 37

so that means if I do get considered to take the class most likely it will be the second class, that would probably be the same for you lambic unless seven people ahead of you decide not to take the first class. You never know?

Now if I only had a link to the drawing. Cerp251 is that possible to post a link? You know what I'm talking about. If not is it the old Regent or is now the new combine cycle or is it both?

Either way Cerp251 thanks for making this thread.

Congrats to the both of you. From the looks of it, you may be in the first class. Something to look forward too! 90 and 89 are excellent scores and higher than my 87. I believe you will get in; however, it is a matter of patience, praying and a lot of mental "woo-saww". "Future18", I must remind you, if you haven't read through this entire thread, as I was reminded about this. In NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM, will you get any kind of info on any material. This is a "civil service" rule and people's careers would be on the line. DO NOT ASK for Sh**! :poke:This thread is most likely being monitored by the Dept. :detectivehans:So beware! Just go through the loopholes like the rest of us and you will succeed. The best thing I can suggest is probably beef up on some basic physics, tools, English, basic prins. of electricity and a lil chemistry and hope to GOD that prepares you for whatever training they have waiting for candidates. This is what i'm doing. To be honest, I'm studying the same material I studied, when I originally took the written exam and it's not even guaranteed that any of us will get in! Good luck to every1 in the selection process; and if any of you could ask, how many ppl are they certifying for this class Nov. 30th???

Question!? For those of us that haven't been certed and got a score of let's say an 87/86 or lower, will they be contacting ppl early next year? possibly feb/march? for those of you, such as: lambic that got a tentative offer, if you could ask them, when the next round of calls will be, I'd appreciate the info.
Also, this interview....is this a panel interview, with situational based questions? thanks....

ok, so check it out. for all you new folks that just took the exam last Sunday; it is a VERY long process. Look at the past post in this thread for a TON of info. (yeah it's old and it's a lot of info but the info is accurate and a lot of questions you have, have been answered already!). but to give the new folks an idea. this is how the process for the ppl currently on the elig. list went. first, took the exam 02/07/15. received scores via email 4 months later, yes 4 MONTHS later, lol...first week of may. after personnel notifies candidates whether you passed or failed the exam, as stated in the bulletin, you move on(if you passed) to the performance test which is weighted @ 100%. The score you got on the written test is NO factor...it's all about how well you do on the performance test. from the time candidates received there notice that they passed the written test to the performance test is dependent on when you applied I believe (my assumption). As in the time and date you submitted your app; on the application when you applied on 'www.governmentjobs.com', the confirmation gave you a time stamp! I believe that personnel schedules performance test based on time stamp, first come, first serve. it was 3-4 weeks after notice you passed the written exam that they notified ppl to take the p. test. once you take the p. test, which will be your final score, determining on your eligibility for hire, it will be another 2-2.5 months to receive the performance test results (it was from May/June to August, for current elig. ppl). Yes! lol.... it is a long process. As far as the p. test goes, ima just put it like this, they wanna see if you can stand upright and blink. simply put a 10 year old kid can do this test. read the bulletin and it is 100% correct on what's going to be on the p. test, but without telling you exactly what the task are.:leghump: but I suggest you read past post b/c its been mentioned on more then one occasion..:flash: good luck....
