I'm looking into buying a trailer. I love ruffin it but the lil woman (CFO) prefers the hotel amenities. I understand and if I want to continue to live in the house and mod the FJ....I best go along with her wishes. We really don't want a small tent trailer or a full size unit and it has to meet the FJ towable requirements. So...I found this:
My wife and I are looking at something like this. We saw a VERY small Airstream trailer that I'm sure the FJ can tow. But we are also on a very tight budget. Storage is an issue, since we can't rent a space. The garage (as Dom and Mud know) is packed with Rear End Product (a trash bin is being rented in a couple of weeks - time to get rid of everything we haven't used in a year or more). The driveway is for 2 cars only.
You can look at Chalet and Aline. They are hard walled pop up trailers. I have had a Chalet now for about 10 years. They are great for high altitude camping. Much warmer than the typical pop up trailers.
Just for information, I will be selling mine within the next couple of months. Let me know if you look at the new ones and want to look at a used one. Tony (FJamming slept in it last week end and fell in love with it. You can ask him about it.
Well...I Bought a 18' travel trailer today. A fun Finder fully loaded for the wife to have that hotel on wheels. Got to install a electric brake set up in the FJ this week....I'll post pics when I get it next week.
Sweet Tim...all I have to ask is what's your nightly rate? I'm sure once Alicia sees it she's gonna wanna sleep in it!! haha Can't wait to see the pics!!
Very true statement. Mama must always be kept happy. She actually asked me if I was getting something new for the FJ soon....I had a grin from ear to ear.... ;D
Sorry Brian, Got your trailer juices flowing again! ;D....You may also want to look at a HiLo and a Fleetwood Tacoma, they are both hard wall pop ups. I can tell ya, I researched all of these and ended up going with the ultra lite 18' full size because I did not want to be setting up and tearing down all the stuff inside, wanted a full sized fridge, A/C heat and all the luxury stuff that comes with it. The unit I got has a GVRW of 5280 lbs and a dry weight of 3000 lbs so towing is not a issue. I will never over gross it because I just don't have 2200 lbs of crap to stuff in it including the holding tanks weight.
To top it all off it was about the same price as most tent trailers and less than a HiLo.
Mine is like the one here but without the rear fold down door and it has whitewashed interior cabs.
I towed it home from Irvine Today.....I added a weight distribution hitch with sway bar and a brake controller to the FJ to help in the towing. I ran 60 MPH all the way with no issues. Gas milage will suffer because the FJ is about as aerodynamic as a brick. It's like a brick towing a brick!
I'll post pictures of the actual trailer in a bit.
We have looked at many trailers, I am the one looking for creature comforts more than Jean, and always ruled out anything that size. Thought it would be too much behind the FJ.
Sounds like you FJ does ok with it though.
The trailer I like is the Airstream Base Camp. It is about twice the price it should be so I would never buy one new but there should be some used in the next year or so closer to what they should actually cost. It just seems to match the FJ nicely. I have heard some not too nice comments about them on the other forum but I think the big issue is the crazy price.
It's a hotel on wheels.....Me, I could care less about shower, toliet etc etc....But I do have to say that I'm gunna be spoiled in it.
Take her down to Irvine to look at them....Oh but bring a checkbook!
