ARB Safari Snorkel

I added an ARB snorkel to my FJ Cruiser.

Photo of the snorkel on the FJC from a recent run to Death Valley via Beatty, Nevada.

From the Amazon to the Andies - from the Kalahari to the Kimberley - from the Sahara to the Simpson, four wheel drivers the world over have put their trust in the ARB Safari Snorkel System. ARB snorkels have been around since the early 1980's and were born out of a need to protect 4WD engines from the hazards of dust and water commonly encountered in touring and off road applications.

I bought my snorkel and had an expert installation team come to my home to aid me in the cutting and fitting (MR & MRS MUDLOVINGFJ).

I don't plan to ford rivers that are deeper than the hood of the rig, but in SoCal, dust is a big problem almost all year, and especially in summer months. I suspect other snorkel-owning FJC drivers will agree that it provides added protection and acts as it's own cold-air-intake at the same time.

how do you snorkel owners do it? it's been a roller coaster ride for me on this mod. one minute, it's on my "to-do-next" list, the next minute...do i really need it? next minute, it does look sweet, and the decrease in dust/ambient temp is a practical reason for the mod (besides the elevated intake), then again...do i really want to cut a hole in my fender? and, it is quite ugly.

rinse, lather, repeat...ARGHHH
Cutting the hole is a rite of passage. All the flip flop you have in your mind will dissapear the minute that blade hits metal. after that moment, you will be happy you did it. your engine will be happy too suckin down air that is 2 degrees over ambient temp. And as for it being ugly, remember Beauty is in the eye of the Beerholder.

Cutting the whole in the fender was like.. possibly the scariest thing ever. But definitely worth it.

I did the entire mojave run, some other trails, and about 4000 other miles since the snorkel install. My filter is still cleaner that it was after a single run through cleghorn.

The dust and grit in the filter has been cut down and though I have no proof, I believe that the fine talc-like dust that might make it past the filter and into the engine has been reduced significantly. That fine grit decreases engine life.

As to the looks, I think it imparts a bit of "maturity" to the FJC. The addition of a snorkel is truly like a right of passage.

I haven't regretted it and I don't know anybody on any of the forums that has. That in and of itself speaks volumes.
I absolutely love my snorkel! There is no way that I will ever get rid of it. I dont regret drilling 15 holes into the sheet metal of my truck, and I know it makes me cooler when I am driving down the street.
It might make the engine cooler, but mud you are out of luck. There is absolutely no chance you will ever be cool, and I do not mean you are hot either. Just a pathetic Site manager.
The ARB Safari Snorkel in a nice and E-z Addition if you can get pass drilling a 4" hole, good clean air!!!

Next to my radios (amateur type, that is...) I feel that the snorkel is the best mod I have done to date. For performance gains alone it is worht the holes drilled... and as Larry (cruiserlarry) has stated in the past, it is one of the bigger conversation starters there is (and we all like talking about our rigs).
I'd be willing to sell/trade my Yaseu vx6r HT for a snorkel.

Come on, scratches, dings, and dents are a big part of this hobby...drilling a 105mm hole in the side of your rig, well, that's like the transition from a boy to a man ;D...

And ugly, you say ?

I love my FJ Cruiser, but really now, it has taillights that stick out like ears, doors that open the wrong way, a windshield with no rake or height, blind spots longer than a Honda Civic, and an overall shape designed by a 3 year old working with Play-Doh....and you think the snorkel's ugly ? ;D
