We had a good time. No carnage or issues, except my air compressor flaking out. Glad I bought it from Costco. ;D

I got GPS waypoints for most of the items we identified in the assesement run, as well as a couple more items. I have a question or two also, and will PM Tony for that. Once the questions are answered, I'll be able to finalize my list.

There was ALOT of trash, mostly in the area where we cleared the fire pit. There's also now an abandoned car. Maybe someone else reported that as well? Its GPS coordinates will be included with the waypoints and detailed list. The trash seems to be primarily on the BLM side of the trail.

For our future work parties, I suggest that the trash details run in groups of 3-4 people, with one FJ per group. Run out to designated miles or half miles, and then walk the trail. It was amazing how much trash you can actually see when you get out and walk.

It could also be a money maker, as most of the trash are bottles and cans with CRV value.

More to come once pictures from Kokopelli get posted up, and I compile the GPS data and our list.

Re: 3N59A run 8/7/08

Thanks to everyone who made the trip out there and taking care of some trail work. Special thanks goes to Dave for the extra work in recording the coordinates and leading the run. I so wish I could've made it out there, but it was just not to be. I like your idea of 3-4 people per group. I think that's the perfect size. I can't wait to see the pictures.

I've replied to your questions and I hope the response is sufficient. :D

Please let me know the hours so I can update Greg. I'll call him later today. I have not gotten a response from him in a LONG time.

We saw a couple rangers coming out of Horse Spring as we pulled in, but no Greg. We also saw a couple more at the gate by Big Pine Flats that heads to Fawnskin. They were going through, but weren't keen on letting us follow. Oh well. I tried to name drop, but no help. ;D

check out the pictures... I was wearing it. The guy opening the gate was fairly cool. The guy driving was highly annoyed.

FYI - what they did say is that the trail (to fawnskin) is severely damaged. (yet, I'm pretty sure they were taking their compact pickup down it to BB). The friendlier ranger said it will probably be at least 2 more years before they open that one up.

Dave,

Great sky shot, I didn't really know how far 3N59A ran, I have a much better idea now.
Thanks for the work on posting this info.

Yeah, based on the mileage data from Greg, it's about 5.5 miles long.

In looking at the trail, and talking to Tony, the best area for us to start is from the Forest side, and working on the items between there and the first BLM border. This would be a good area to focus on, because it has one major challenge, but the threat is less there because of limited accessibility.

What I'm thinking now (in my head) is about the maintenance run. It should concentrate on that area, focus on the 'easy' stuff, of fence repair, trash pickup, and MAYBE throwing some local natural barriers on SOME of the smaller illegal trails. Hopefully I can join, but if not, then I'll make another one a couple of weeks later.

The SBNF has insurance for people who are working out there and that's the reason I suggested that we focus our efforts on the forest side. I'm not even sure if we're welcomed on the BLM side. Not sure where Bowen ranch begins or ends so I wouldn't want to be tresspassing.
