This past Sunday a few of us from the forum got together and went out to our adopted trail to record GPS positions for work that needs to be done and to pick up trash and spot any other problems. We started with an OC caravan from Tustin with CADavebert and passenger, me, and mtnkraut with Kokopeli riding shot gun. We made our way to Apple Valley around 9:30 where we joined up with TTFJoel and friend. We waited around until 10 in case any one else decided to come and we missed the message then we set off for our trail.

After a few wrong turns we found the path into the hills and stopped for lunch at Horse Springs. After lunch we found our trail and made a run to one end stopping every few minutes to gather GPS data and trash. I don't know if CADavebert got pictures of it but we filled up a large bag with junk left on and around the trail. We then ran the trail in the opposite direction and connected up to 3N16 and went back home on the opposite side of the mountian from where we started.

We had a good clean run, nobody had any technical problems except for one dead air compressor and we had a good time.

My view most of the day, following CADavebert

General landscape of the area heading toward 3N59A

Talking about how to deal with illegal trails

mtnkraut's FJ hiding in there somewhere

CADavebert doing the challenging climb (I took the left)

Great shots! Thanks for making this trip guys. I wish I could've been out there too! I'm looking forward to get back out there and start putting shovel to dirt. Big thumbs up to you all! :)

BTW... I know it's not an easy one, so I'll help out.

My passenger was Nitin. He's from India, but has lived here in the US for many years. Naturalized citizen. Went to BYU. Lived in San Fran for many years and moved to the OC about 5-6 years ago. I've known him since 2000 through work, and he now works at the same company.

He also went on the assessment run, and was known as "Cowboy", based on what one of H535's kids called him.

Looks like a good time. I can't wait to get out with a group. Any idea when the next trip is going to be? I need a weeks notice. My wife keeps us pretty busy.

Hans could probably say with better chances of being right, but my guess is the car is stolen and dumped. If that's the case, when we go up there, I'll bring a few CHP 180's (impond forms) with me for the abandoned vehicles. We may have to have the ranger with us to call for the area police tow, but at least we can have the paperwork filled out for them.

Out in Hawaii the cars that were abandoned far back in some areas would sit ther for months at a time, On one of the cleanups out there some guys hooked up straps and pulled em to the road and they were gone in a day. Just an Idea.

Looks like a fun time, I can't wait to get out there someday :(

Re: Sept. 7th 2008 3N59A/Big Bear Area Report

I'd meant to get the number for calling Greg or others at the Forest service, but I haven't done it yet. Where it was parked is on BLM land I believe, and in a pretty high traffic area (compared with farther back on the trail). Based on the Ranger activity we saw that day, I'm fairly sure they know it's there, but just haven't taken the time to do anything with it yet.

If it stays long enough, it will just be a hunk of metal. It had good tires, and I'm surprised they were still on it. Radio and console stuff gone. ignition all busted. Windows were all busted.

We're making sure to report to Greg.
