    2009/06/13 Anza Borrego

What a wonderful day. We had a couple hiccups due to my memory of the area but everything, as usual, worked out great. Well before 10 AM LGtiny and his bro were at my house and we watched a bit of TV and outside the window the sky was overcast. A perfect sign for the desert off season. We rolled up to the Poway rd/67 intersection and met Munkay and N1ntendo, a few minutes later RioDEW rolled up and our caravan was on its way. We rolled through Ramona and envied the couple of Pnzgauers as we passed, slid through scenic Julian, Wynola and Banner. Between the hairpin turns and a bicyclist plus a 6 inch lifter FJ the ride was slow but fun, a couple of nanny(VSC) beeps on that road and we entered the mecca of socal offroading. We took a right on the S2 and marveled at the scenery as we mocked the tweaker trailer camps. Well long morning story short, I kept thinking we went a bit too far, but I kept pushing on. But after a while I told the crew "I think we missed the turnoff". We backtracked looking for it and ended up back at the 72 and I was feeling like a doof. I'd done this run 2 times before but I was second guessing myself too much. We ran into Borrego springs to get gas because a couple of us were on low by now and a good regrouping was needed. At the gas station we were treated to some very loud Mariachi music or maybe mexican top 40, I'm not sure. Just before the decision to roll to town I took my eyes off the GPS and realized I had a freaking offroad map of the whole AB state park. I'm such a dork. Well We filled up, got our regroup on, and headed down to Ocotillo wells and headed straight for devils slide. SOOO much fun. We had a great time just climbin around the small stuff and buzzin up the sand wall. After some fun runnin and learning how to program our FJammers for color and scrolling text(thanks RioDEW) we said our farewells to LGTiny cause his passenger had to get back to the fam.(again my bad, you guys wanted to run a trail but it was mostly road before the sand park to this point) After the OHV we headed out down Split mountain road and again I went down the Exploration road AKA Twaekers Driveway. Finally I got my bearings and we proceeded up split mountain road, stopped at elephant trees for a sec then continued on to fish creek. We ended up doing our planned trip in reverse. It was such a trip to do this run backwards, so fun though. Top heat was like 88 compared to like 116 a couple months ago when we did it. Well We BOMBED this trip. serious record time. I think we did it in like 1.75 hours from start to other side. Munkay was a trooper in her stocker, she had no mods but the CB and impressed the hell out of me. I wouldn't say I needed to spot her ever, but just give a hint or two. The girl is a beast. We were Bombing through the washes some times at 85 MPH and she was right there fully stock!!. I remember feeling like I'd be pissin blood on my stock suspension after runs like that. So we came up to the fish creek/ Arroyo seco del diablo crossover aka little Johnbull and everyone walked it. Then up the Diablo dropoff. I know its preferably a one way but we had to get home. One thing that made me sad was the 6 different climbs where there used to be 1 at the second step. Again everyone walked it, then was the top of the drop. Definitly an ATRAC moment, and the MUNK got stuck for a sec, but she backed up a couple, locked the rear and slid right up. Again we were on the run, Seriously this was the fastest funnest and sometimes scariest run I ever did here!. after plenty more haulzin balzin and a couple face high rocks comin for us before the Nanny kicked in we hit the mud caves. A big bummer to me is one of the roof chunks dropped, but it wasnt due to humans thank god, or that place would be off limits too. After that we hit the chimeny cave on foot, such a gem of earth and as I saw on the big cave, it definitly isnt permanent, so it was great to see it again before it falls. We hit a few more washes and a small rock garden, then finally got back to the original spot we should of started at. 7 Miles from where we originally turned around at in the morning. lol
I wouldn't of changed a bit of it.....Except for the gas prices.
Awesome Fawkin day with awesome freakin folks!!! Ride on!!!!

Munkay got an FJ???? How cool is that!! Rock on girl! I must have missed that discussion somehow...

Man, I wish I coulda wheeled with ya'll!

Judy broke her ankle on a bike ride 'bout 6 weeks ago. It was the first time for either of us in 30 years or so...yup, we're old! Maybe we shoulda known better. It was a bad break too, 3 places so she'll be out of action for a while yet. I've been workin' like a dog plus nursing her so I've missed alot.

Looks like a great run in spite of FunJunkies spatial spasms!

It was an awesome day for sure!!! Good friends, good times! Mike, Daryn, and I ordered some pizza and wings (thanks Daryn!) and Daryn set up Mike's internet since he just got his new modem. Once we were done, we went to see BoBoNel and Frogeye at Barona Casino while they were waiting in line overnight to apply for next season's Survivor and brought 'em some pizza and cheesy bread! I think they may have been able to make a few bucks by selling their pizza to the jealous people who didn't think to have friends stop by with food...
