Winter YAAR Trail Run Report (Dec 2014)

Highlights of the 2014 Winter YAAR include:

On day one we had eleven trucks commanded by….
Bobby Nelson who also served as the tail gunner
    Sirwin a.k.a. Sean
Sandman a.k.a. Craig with Pierce the trusty copilot
    TPFJ a.k.a. Tommy
BajaToy a.k.a. Oscar and the Family
    Jose and family
    Jeffe a.k.a. Jeff
    Nick
Hawk and copilot soon to be come pilot and possibly S.O.
    Paul and Joe
    Allsmeller a.k.a. Andy and kids
    Bajaraja a.k.a. Scott, me

Day two the group trimmed down to five with a few rigs from Bailey’s team…
    Basil
    DoubleR
    Kyle
    Baily
    and me again.

Total miles for days one and two: 85
    Best birthday YAAR ever: OSCAR!!!
    Worst YAAR joke: Soy Milk
Astronomy lessons were provided by Ken Y from Team Bailey
Flight lessons were provided by Ken.
Desert critter crawl provided by Craig and Pierce.
Raging bon fire provided by all!

Day one took us from the start just outside of Borrego Springs, east along Borrego Sink Wash to Sand Canyon. From there we hit the highway and drove to the Ocotillo Wells SVRA visitor center. After a brief break we entered the rec area and headed up Shell Reef Expressway , then hit the Lost Lizzard Trail to get to the Pumpkin Patch. Next we drove up the Cross Over Trial and then headed up Tierra Del Sol, briefly stopping at our planned campsite. We continued up Tierra Del Sol, exited into Arroyo Salado wash which took us up to highway S22. We crossed the highway to enter the Calcite Mine trail. We explored the mine in two groups since parking is a bit hard to find. Coming down from the Calcite Mine we got buzzed by Ken’s quad-copter. Next we entered Tectonic Gorge which took us to the 4x4 area where we met up with Bailey’s team. After a brief exchange of greetings we took off for camp and finally began to relax.

Soon Bailely’s group of ten or so trucks showed up and the party started so to speak. Oscar’s birthday celebration lasted for several hours. We heard jokes, drank good shots, and watch the group slowly deteriorate. Ken brought out his telescope, and his fine wines, and gave us a tour of the sky. Craig and Pierce brought along a black light and we went looking for desert critters. Little did we know that we were sharing out camp with scorpions. Photo proof to follow.

Day two started out a bit slow for some as you can imagine but others awoke early and photographed a beautiful sunrise over the badlands. Hopefully we see some pics of that. Most people headed for home but five trucks remained for the next day’s adventure. We took off for Salton City then headed south to Campbell Wash. We followed the wash to the Gas Dome where we met the park rangers and inquired about more challenging route options. Here’s where we struck gold. The ranger challenged us to get from one area of the rec area to another without using any official trails. Meaning we’d go cross country and have to find our own route and overcome all obstacles - something our FJs were designed for. We had a lot of fun climbing hills, dropping into washes and navigating the widely varying terrain. Two hours later we reached out objective and began to work our way home. Thus ended the Winter YAAR.

Special thanks to EVERYONE who came along - I cannot think of a better group to explore and socialize with. People were fun, generous, caring and just a great bunch of people to spend a few days with. Ken, Bailey and James were troopers for getting another team going when I was reluctant to add more to my group. Oscar and his gang made for one heck of a fun night and all of us got to help celebrate his birthday. Ken and Craig help with night time shows. Hawk was the all around good guy to hang with, and his copilot did a fantastic job of driving that John may never get behind the wheel again on these trip.

Had a great time wheeling and meeting everyone, day one we just ran some simple washes with the reverse guys, and then day two we just picked a direction and headed that way, no trail or anything, it was a blast.

Here are a few photos from the weekend, should have more soon

Sweet pics basil! Had too much fun this weekend. CCOR B-day parties can get a little out of hand.

There's a whole playground with obstacles. Hoping someone got more pics of the little sluice and maybe the tires (even tho that one kicked both of our asses)
