    Death Valley October 23-25th

    Hello,

Gonna hit Death Valley with my friend and his little tiny raptor. This is the information he sent me to post here. He'd like to keep the group to around 8 people to make things easier and we have 3.

    Friday

    · Arrive at any time at the Queen of Sheba mine: 36.0000423077, -116.886473961

    · Possible night run up Johnson Canyon

    · Camp for the night

    Saturday

    · Leave camp around 10am

    · Take Mengal Pass over the mountain ridge and down the other side through Goler Wash

o Warm Springs, Quick stop to check out the area

o Geologist Cabin, Quick stop to check out the area

o Quick stop at Barker Ranch (Manson hideout)

    o Stop at Keystone Mine

o Ballarat Ghost Town, Quick stop to check out the area

    · Setup Camp off Minietta Mine Road around 4pm

    · Possible Night Run to Lookout City or the Darwin Loop

    Sunday

    · Shoot

    · Maybe a short run before everyone heads home

This is dispersed camping trip. Depending on locations there will be outhouses, but that’s it. You will need to pack out everything you brought with you. Bring everything you need including food, water and gas.

Expensive gas is located at Panamint Springs Resort $5 per gallon is not unheard of. Cheap(er) gas is available in Trona, but it is about an hour drive. We usually stop in Trona on the way home headed south.

    HAM Signals
    Primary
    151.880 MHz11.25 kHzN/A
    Secondary

    Anyone interested let me know

Not in amateur frequencies. Mobile frequencies.

Some radios can function in this range (UV5R), but not legal to transmit in the US unless you have an emergency. You can listen all you want.

Hint: 2M Ham is limited from 144Mhz to 148Mhz, plenty of room.

Time to hit QRZ.com and start your technician's exam practice tests... (before you get a nastygram)

that's MURS range... Free to use in the USA. 2watt TX limit

Multi-Use Radio Service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

My commercial 2m operates there too. My paid for FCC channels are right next to that range.

    Yep, its MURS .

Have to wonder what the propagation is compared to GMRS at 5 watts.

Need to add the MURS channels to my CHIRP settings for UV5R, awesome little radios.

    Re: Death Valley October 23-25th

In the US the FCC designates frequency ranges for different uses like FRS (no license) Amatuer Radio (HAM Lincense Rqd), Mobile Commercial Freq.s (like your phone), Emergency Services….

Typically Equipment is limited to a specific range of use related to license requirements with few exceptions.

The UV5R can physically Transmit and Receive on a wide range of frequencies, your supposed to program and operate the equipment in the Freq. and power ranges specified by the FCC to be compliant.

Using 4 watts on 2 watt limited MURS while not legal would probably go unnoticed.

Start transmitting on aviation or Fire/Police/Government frequencies, expect an a$$ beating.

Learning which freq.'s to use is a big part of what the technicians exam is about.

… and you get a geeky hat.
