    Dalton Highway/Arctic Circle Run 05-04-2018

So, as many of you know, I went up to Fairbanks to visit my brother this past week. Now, as a disclaimer, I did fly up but since the following adventure took place in my brother's 2012 FJ, I figure it counts as an adventure in the FJ.

My brother's FJ is stock height, with Cooper MT's on it. No mods yet. It handled very well in the snow and slush.

    Preparing for the Dalton:

The Dalton Highway begins about 80 miles north of Fairbanks. The pavement ends and it turns to dirt, with scattered pavement patches all the way up to the Arctic Circle.

We did stop at the Dalton entrance sign for a pic on the way back to Fairbanks explaining why the FJ is very dirty.

Most of the Dalton Highway looked like this:

After about 100 miles on the Dalton, we reached the Yukon River. My brother had told me that it was a very big river, but I had to see it for myself. It is a bit smaller than the Mississippi, but still huge, and frozen.

Just across the Yukon River is the only store until you get to Coldfoot. We stopped to use the restroom and get a soda. I picked up a few stickers for my FJ while I was there.

It was a good thing we brought extra gas because it was a bit pricey at the Yukon.

We continued our journey to the Arctic Circle. Here is a pic looking back at the Yukon bridge that we had just crossed:

The Arctic Circle is roughly 120 miles from the Yukon Camp. Weather got much worse as we proceeded north. I want to say that it was about 45 degrees at the Yukon Camp which is perfect.
Once we got closer to Finger Mountain and the Arctic Circle, it got bad. The wind was blowing from the east and the piling several inches of snow/slush all over the road.

It got down into the low 30's with high winds. I actually had to put on a sweater.

Shortly after getting through the slushy mess, we finally had arrived at our destination.

Of course, I had to get my pic taken in front of the epic sign.

Behind the Arctic Circle sign is a wooden deck with some information on the wildlife that happens to be in the area during certain parts of the year.

And of course, the back of the sign has a bunch of off road club stickers:

There was a "Vegas FJ's" sticker already on the sign. Somehow, someway, a "SoCal FJ Cruisers AAT" sticker mysteriously appeared right next to the Vegas sticker.

A few more pics at the Arctic Circle:

I got to drive on the way back. Having never driven a stock FJ, I was very impressed with the handling through the slushy part and overall.
For those of you that plan on doing this trip, be prepared. The weather can and will change in an instant. There are potholes everywhere on the Dalton that can swallow a motorcycle whole.
Bring plenty of gas. We brought 20 extra gallons, but only needed to use 5. Granted the low fuel light came on right outside of Fairbanks. Better to have too much than too little.
Pack food. We started the Dalton at 1030am and did not get back until after 6pm.

Wow what a cool trip. Somebody will have to investigate how a
"SoCal FJ Cruisers AAT" sticker made its way onto that sign.
